You don’t need a magic shake to lose weight

Last week I had an interview and I was asked about my thoughts on shakes and products that help people lose weight.

My view is simple: a big no-no! I understand that people who buy those types of products, most of the time just aren’t educated on what is actually inside them. And the sellers either know and don’t care or also don’t know and believe what the brands sell to them.

Normally they sell it as being THE greatest invention. They even have charts where they compare the different brands.

So why don’t I believe in those products? Here’s why: If you decide to feed your body with a meal replacement drink, that seems to me that your relationship with food is not ideal. Perhaps even scary... so it’s easier to cut the scary part out, that way you don’t have to deal with it.

But the truth is, at some point, you will have to face it! And it will be even scarier.

Let’s say you had those meal replacement products for three months and you lost weight. At the end of that period, your fear is back: food. But your knowledge and relationship with food are still the same as before you started your “shakes programme”.

So what is likely to happen? Old behaviour comes back and with it comes the weight gain. Frustration levels rise up and you have three options: number one, go back to the shakes and keep living a yo-yo lifestyle; number two, give up altogether and be overweight; or number three, look for professional advice and change your knowledge and relationship with food so that you never have to be scared of it again.

The problem is not in food, the problem is in the lack of education and understanding about the relationship humans have with food.
