If there is something lockdown has come to show us all, is that you don’t need a gym to be active. And yes there are certain things that you can only train with specific gym equipment… but even then, so many of us found ways of using our garages, gardens and spare rooms and turn them into mini gyms.
Others like me, have found running and cycling as a new way of moving and looking after our mental health. Exercising has been essential more than ever, to keep us balanced. Being isolated to such extent and for a prolonged period of time isn’t natural for us human beings and surely in some way or another we’ve all been affected.
When it comes to being active, there are endless ways of making that happen. From the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep, you have the opportunity to move your body. Even when you don’t have the time to do a long workout session, you can do a short high-intensity session. Then, throughout your day you can include micro-moments of movement that when counted together, will make a difference in your overall levels of activity. When it comes to these, be creative!
Here are my suggestions:
Squat while you cook
Take the stairs instead of the lift
Workout as you watch tv
Go for a walk as you listen to an audiobook
Get a standing desk
Walk to the shops instead of driving.
There are no limits to it, use your imagination and remember that you are human and human’s natural instinct is to move. So follow your instincts and move as much as you can!
I will leave you with a real-life example… Once, I met a guy, an adult… and we were travelling to go train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in another gym and as we were walking in London’s streets he started hopping as children do. At first, I laughed, but then I tried it as well. It felt amazing! It changed my mood immediately!
So next time you want to feel a little lighter and happier, just hop as you walk :P
